A documentary on Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution, which was launched in 1966 and was a tumultuous period aimed at purging traditional elements from Chinese society, thereby reinforcing Mao's ideological control. Central to this upheaval were the Red Guards, militant youth groups who acted as Mao's enforcers, targeting anyone deemed insufficiently revolutionary. They engaged in widespread destruction of cultural artifacts and subjected individuals to "struggle sessions" and public shaming rituals where accused "counterrevolutionaries" were publicly humiliated, criticized, and often physically abused to enforce conformity.
